Our Heroes: 'Shy Robbie will be just thrilled at this'
The Sentinel. Stoke & Staffordshire
29th June 2009
ROBBIE Williams is used to receiving awards for his music – but now he has been nominated as a Sentinel Hero for the work he does for charity.
While the singer, above, may have long left his native Stoke-on-Trent, the Potteries are never far from his thoughts, as he has shown in his song lyrics and interviews. And numerous charities and community groups have been given cash by the singer, through the Give It Sum fund he set up for Comic Relief in 2000. Then, Robbie used £2 million he earned from advertising Pepsi cola to launch the venture so he could give back to worthy causes in the city of his birth. Since then he has donated generously to help set up a number of charities and community groups; provided children's play equipment, football team strips and tackled poverty; and ploughed cash into schools and education.
Now, after winning 15 Brit Awards – more than any other artist – Robbie has been nominated for a Sentinel Our Heroes Award in the Charity Champion category. John Reynolds, chairman of Holden Lane Residents' Association, is grateful to Robbie for the £30,000 he provided to build a new playground on land off Repington Road, Sneyd Green. Mr Reynolds said: "Robbie has put a lot of money into Sneyd Green over the years. It was Robbie Williams who first started our residents' association with a donation of £500. "If it wasn't for Robbie we wouldn't exist and we wouldn't have been able to build the playground. In fact, if it wasn't for Robbie there are a lot of community groups that wouldn't exist today."
The Give It Sum Fund allocates grants of up to £30,000 to community organisations with an income under £150,000. The fund has given out more than 260 grants since it was set up. Kerry Bradbury, secretary of Newcastle Albion Football Team, says the singer bought coats and jumpers for the under-10s players. She said: "It's great to see Robbie being recognised for the good work he does." Robbie's mum Jan Williams is a director of the charity. She said: "I think it's really good of them to nominate him. He has never asked for anything in return from anyone. "He's just glad he's been able to do something. Robbie will be thrilled, but in a shy way." She added: "It has been lovely to be part of it, to make a difference. "And you can see the difference Give It Sum has made. It has been a most wonderful period, one of the best of my life. "Robert wanted it to be a hand up, not a hand out."
For more details on the grants, contact a Give it Sum adviser.

'£10m tour' for Robbie
Monday, May 11, 2009
The Sentinel
ROBBIE Williams is rumoured to be planning a £10 million UK comeback tour and a brand new album next year.
The Potteries-born superstar is said to be in talks about a 10-date appearance at London's O2 Arena and other venues in the UK.
He is rumoured to have ditched plans to rejoin Take That and will instead concentrate on reviving his successful solo career.
He is said to be working with Angels songwriter Guy Chambers and producer Mark Ronson to put together the last album under his £80 million EMI contract ahead of the tour.
Robbie Williams says he is "buzzing" about his new album, as work gathers pace on the follow-up to "Rudebox".
The singer recently moved back to the UK after a number of years living in Los Angeles and is readying himself for a pop comeback.
According to reports, he has written 50 songs for his latest record and is now recording with legendary producer Trevor Horn.
Speaking to a UK tabloid, Williams said he was "positive" about the album, explaining: "It sounds 'Big', very. I'm buzzing."
There are currently no release details or title for the new Robbie material. source

BEST ALBUM COVERS OF THE 21ST CENTURY [SO FAR]
by James Hurley, MSN Music Editor
They say you can't judge a book by its cover, and the same clearly applies to albums. But there's nothing wrong with judging a cover on its own merits.
While some people will tell you the golden age of album artwork died when vinyl ceased to be the format of choice for most music-lovers, it would be wrong to suggest the 21st century hasn't produced some corkers.
Designed by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, the cover of Intensive Care uses the classic 'angel on one shoulder, devil on the other' idea to great effect. Better still is the main image of Williams apparently rubbing on the lens of the camera. Courtesy of MSN

Whiter Shade 'most played' song
BBC News. 13th April, 2009
Procol Harum's A Whiter Shade of Pale is the most played song in public places in the last 75 years, according to a chart compiled for BBC Radio 2.
The song, with its distinctive organ riff, stayed at number one for six weeks in the UK in the summer of 1967.
Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody was at number two followed by All I Have To Do Is Dream by the Everly Brothers. There was no place in the top 10 for The Beatles.
The UK chart, presented by Rob Brydon, was compiled by licensing firm PPL.
Procol Harum lead singer Gary Brooker, who last year won back full royalty rights to the band's hit after a court battle, said its number one position in the 100-song chart was a "great and unsought honour".
"It isn't something I could have remotely imagined when I wrote the song and then made that legendary recording with Procol Harum all those years ago.
"Every musician and singer hopes to reach out and communicate to the audience so it means a great deal that the record has such an indefinable popularity and lasting appeal."
Wet Wet Wet's summer smash of 1994, Love Is All Around, was at number four followed by Bryan Adams' 1991 hit (Everything I Do) I Do It For You. The Beatles and Robbie Williams both had the most number of entries in the chart with three each.
For the Beatles, Hello Goodbye was at number 11, Get Back was at number 13 and From Me To You was at number 51.
For Williams, Angels was at number six, Rock DJ was at number 16 and Strong was at number 56.

Robbie at friend's opening night

Pop star Robbie Williams set flashbulbs popping after turning up to watch his best friend perform in a hit musical.
The singer was in Manchester for the opening night of We Will Rock You, the popular show based on the songs of rock legends Queen.
Williams' friend, actor Jonathan Wilkes, is starring in the show, which is embarking on a UK tour opening at the Palace Theatre.
Despite eschewing the red carpet for the venue's more discreet stage door, the former Take That star was spotted by hordes of waiting press and fans as he disembarked from a large black bus with the letters VIP written on the side.
Williams, dressed in a black jacket and grey scarf, declined to comment as he made his way through a sea of cameras and autograph books into the theatre.
TV presenter Ant McPartlin also attended the show along with stars from Coronation Street and Hollyoaks.
On learning that Williams was in attendance, McPartlin said: "I haven't seen him for a while, so I'm looking forward to seeing him."
Choreographer Arlene Phillips said: "Queen music lives for ever. You love the music, you love Freddie Mercury's voice - he had the most unusual voice.
"The musicianship, it's legendary music and I love working to it."
She added: "I love Robbie. I'm thrilled he's here and his best friend's in the show and he's very good."
Williams made no comment as he arrived.

Robbie attends lobby group meeting

Robbie Williams has attended a musicians' lobby group meeting
Stars including Robbie Williams, KT Tunstall and David Gray have attended a meeting by a lobby group fighting for the interests of artists and fans.
Robbie arrived for the meeting by the Featured Artists' Coalition and was quickly surrounded by photographers and autograph hunters. His security staff quickly ushered him into the venue and he did not stop to comment.
Of Robbie's involvement in the coalition - which campaigns for effective laws and regulations, and for transparent and fair business practices - KT Tunstall said: "If somebody like Robbie stamps his feet the earth will move."
She added: "I'm here because I think that the writing part of music doesn't get a lot of attention when it comes to doing business deals.
As artists we haven't stopped to think about the digital movement and what that means to us as owners of our own intellectual property."
Richard Jones, bass player in The Feeling, said: "The internet has basically rewritten the rule book on how the music industry works.
It's important for the people who are making the music that they get what they need to facilitate that because we've got to make a living after all otherwise we won't be able to carry on doing it."
David Gray added: "Everybody is filled with uncertainty. Record sales are disappearing and we don't know how it is all going to work in the future."
The FAC's first board of directors comprises Blur drummer David Rowntree, Soul II Soul's Jazzie B, Billy Bragg, Radiohead guitarist Ed O'Brien, Kate Nash, Marillion keyboard player Mark Kelly and Master Shortie.
Robbie Williams and Catherine Tate Provide Comic Relief!
Get ready for the best Comic Relief night of TV you’ve ever seen
this Friday night!
The fantastic line-up has just got even better now that David Walliams
and Matt Lucas are coming back to our shores with two exclusive Little
Britain sketches for the big TV show.
The Little Britain duo will be joined by the sensational pop star,
Robbie Williams and comedy genius, Catherine Tate for a perfect comedy
collaboration!
In the Uber Carol sketch, the credit crunch comes to Little Britain -
and Carol (David Walliams) is summoned to her boss Dawn’s (Catherine
Tate) office. Will Carol keep her job or will Dawn’s computer
evaluation of her skills lead to the immortal line “Computer says
no”?
And the second sketch will see Ellie Grace (Matt Lucas) get her friend
Candy Marie-Candy (Robbie Williams) to sleepover. Whilst Mom (David
Walliams) is cooking breakfast they begin to play a game of ‘I love
you more…’ with some interesting results!
On filming the sketch, Robbie said, ‘It’s hard to say no when asked to
take part in a Little Britain sketch for Comic Relief. But I have to
admit that dressing up as a small American child in a pretty dress
made it all the more appealing!’
These two brilliant sketches will form just part of a whole night of
comedy gold in a one-off extravaganza of top telly treats on
Comic Relief – Funny for Money, this Friday on BBC One from 7pm.
Make sure you tune in!
Robbie Williams is to make his return to British TV screens on Comic Relief this month, according to reports.
The pop icon recently moved back to the UK, after a number of years living in Los Angeles.
He is set to star in a comedy sketch alongside Matt Lucas, David Walliams and Catherine Tate on the annual Red Nose day.
The "Little Britain USA" clip will apparently mirror a similar piece he recorded for the fundraising event in 2005.
This year's Comic Relief takes place on Friday, March 13.
Now, after so much dancing, singing and excitement, it’s time to calm down with a new song in the chart – Kanye West and his Love Lockdown on number 14. Calm? Not really, because number 15 is Sander Van Doorn Vs. Robbie Williams and “Close my Eyes”! Great techno rhythm, which will send you straight to the dance floors!

Robbie Williams supports Children’s Hospice SOS Appeal
Pop star Robbie Williams has spoken out in support of Donna Louise Children’s Hospice, a local charity he has supported for a number of years.
At the end of January, the charity which cares for life threatened children and their families, closed its doors 2 nights a week in a bid to cut costs at a time when donations are dropping as a result of the economic slowdown.
Williams, who has been a Patron of the children’s hospice since 2002 and has made numerous donations to the charity, joined television comedians Jo Brand and Nick Hancock in backing the charity’s SOS Appeal.
He said, “Ay up! Being a Stoke lad, I am very proud to be a Patron of Donna Louise Children’s Hospice. It is a very special place of which we should all be proud and grateful. The whole place was built through the generosity of the people of Staffordshire and South Cheshire and now they are really struggling and need our help. They can’t exist without your support…every bit helps so please do what you can and join me in supporting their SOS Appeal.”
The charity relies on the generosity of the public to raise the £2 million needed each year to provide respite and end of life care to children with life threatening conditions.
Melanie Mills, Head of Fundraising and PR said, “Robbie has been a Patron since 2002 and we are grateful for his ongoing and generous support. Even whilst in USA we have sent him news and pictures of the hospice from time to time. It is wonderful to have him back home continuing his support for the charity. His message was sent from him with love and in the hope that others will join him in doing what they can to support our SOS Appeal.”
Robbie Williams Teams Up With Amy Winehouse Producer For New Album
And former songwriting partner.
Robbie Williams has been working with Mark Ronson on his new album,
his manager has revealed.
Tim Clark said the singer had recorded a "very interesting song" with
the producer, who was responsible for Amy Winehouse's 2006 album 'Back
To Black'.
Williams, who is due to enter the studio in March or April, has also
written tracks with former songwriter partner Guy Chambers and Soul
Mekanik.
"He's now looking for producers. Nothing further has been said yet,
but he's talking to a lot of interesting people," Clark told Music
Week.
The singer's manager also said it would make "no sense" for Williams
to sign a conventional record deal when his current agreement with EMI
ends.
Williams is due to deliver two more albums – one studio release and a
'best of' – before his five-album deal with EMI expires.
Clark said Williams would not consider signing another "old-fashioned
record deal" and was more interested in exploring new avenues to
release his music.
Williams is due to release his new album before the end of 2009.

Robbie Williams is ready to deliver a new album for EMI after Guy
Hands reached an accommodation with Tim Clark, the singer's manager
whose comments about "plantation owner" record bosses caused a spat.
"We've kissed and made up," Clark said at Midem, the music industry's
annual shindig in Cannes. "Guy is starting to understand that we are
dealing with artists and the record company is there to provide the
best services." Robbie's contractual future is unclear though. "We
have a 'Best of' after the new record this year," Clark said. "Robbie
is moving back to England and I imagine there will be a range of
people wanting to talk to him then."
Last year Geraldine of RWAP and Chrissie of RWO had a
brilliant idea to bring four fan sites together to form the Robbie
Williams Fansites United and here we are again and this time it is for
Robbie's birthday!
This year to celebrate Robbie's special day we are supporting the
British Heart Foundation, this charity has been chosen in light of
Jan's, Robbie's mum, recent health scare during Christmas
2008.
RWO, RWAP, FS and TRWS are all part of Robbie Williams Fansites
United and our birthday card to Robbie this year is a very special one
in the shape of another JustGiving page, with the donations going to
the British Heart Foundation.
Robbie's birthday is February 13th and February is also National
Heart Month and our chance to take a stand against the UK's biggest
killer and help them in their amazing work for the prevention,
treatment and causes of heart disease in the UK.
We do hope you will join us, and now, if anyone wishes, you can pay
by PayPal.
Please join all of us in sending your Birthday wishes to Robbie.

much, accumulatively we can achieve a lot and that is the heart of
it.

ABBA and Elvis Presley both feature twice
Nov 20, 2008
The most popular karaoke songs for 2008 have been revealed.
Robbie Williams nabs the Number One spot with his 1997 single
'Angels', while Amy Winehouse's Mark Ronson-produced cover of The
Zutons' song 'Valerie' is at Number Two.
According to the Performing Right Society ABBA and Elvis Presley both
feature twice on the poll.
Guy Chambers, who co-wrote 'Angels' track with Robbie Williams, said

and functions as a prayer at the same time. In an increasingly secular
world we still need songs that bring people together."
The track has now sold two million copies globally.
The Top Ten most popular karaoke songs for 2008 are:
1. 'Angels' - Robbie Williams

Is Pop's Most Famous Feud Over?
Sky News
UK, Saturday November 08, 2008
They had one of the most famous falling-outs in pop history, but now
former Take That bandmates Robbie Williams and Gary Barlow appear to
have made amends.
Gary Barlow with Robbie Williams at the Emirates Stadium
The pair turned up together to watch the Arsenal v Manchester United
game at the Emirates Stadium in north London, and joked with a Sky
Sports reporter over their rediscovered friendship.
Williams, 34, quipped: "We've not spoken a word to each other yet - we
don't know how this is going to go."
"It could go either way this yet, mate," Barlow added.
When asked why, as a Port Vale fan, he was at the game, Williams said:
"Actually I do have to say that I call Man Utd Secret Vale because
when you support Port Vale for as long as I have it's nice to have a
decent win every now and again... I'm a Vale man but I like to see Man
United do well."
Williams, who left Take That to launch a solo career in 1995, even put
his arm round Barlow during the interview.
The multimillionaire solo artist has spent most of his time in Los
Angeles while his former bandmates have enjoyed a successful comeback,
which is to cumulate in a major stadium tour next year.
Take That Present The Circus Live - Summer 2009 will see Barlow and
Barlow and his fellow band members Howard Donald, Jason Orange and
Mark Owen play in eight stadium venues.
Sky News reporter Enda Brady said: "It was quite a shock to see the
two of them together after everything that has been said.
"There's a whisper Robbie has a new album on its way, and Take That
are touring next summer. What an amazing comeback that would be if he
were to join them."
A tour spokeswoman said there were no plans for Williams to make any
tour appearances. SOURCE

Port Vale: Robbie puts his shirt on Vale kids
Thursday, November 06, 2008
by Michael Baggaley
The Sentinel
PORT Vale have enlisted two of the biggest celebrities on the planet
to raise funds for their youth team.
Robbie Williams and Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo have
put their signatures to shirts which will be auctioned off at a
sporting dinner at Vale Park next month.
Vale have put a reserve price of £500 on each of the shirts with all
profits going to their youth department.
Vale secured the autographed Manchester United shirt from Ronaldo
thanks to their former defender Adam Eckersley who was on loan from
Old Trafford last season.
Vale's majority shareholder Robbie was happy to help when he popped
into Vale Park last week on a surprise visit from his home in Los
Angeles.
Lottery manager Brian Lewis said he was stunned to meet Robbie.
He said: "I was in the office and, when someone said Robbie was
outside, I didn't believe them. We've got a tribute act coming in, so
I thought that must be where he was from.
"I said 'Go on then, I'll fall for it', but when I got outside there
he was on the car park ... and everyone was going ga ga.
"We didn't want to hassle him but, when I explained what we wanted the
signed shirt for, he said it was a pleasure."
The shirts will be auctioned on December 5 when Vale host their latest
sporting dinner. Fans can bid on the evening or make sealed offers to
Brian in advance.
Former Liverpool and England defender Neil Ruddock is guest speaker
for the event, which also features a comedian and a three-course meal.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS STUNNED PORT VALE PLAYERS, STAFF AND FANS - BY TURNING UP AT THE CLUB UNANNOUNCED
The Sentinel
The multi-millionaire, who owns a majority stake in the Vale, toured
the ground, signed autographs and posed for photographs yesterday.
The 34-year-old singer, who grew up in Burslem and Tunstall, was
taking time out from his Los Angeles studio, where he has been working
on a new album to be released next year.
And Hamil Road was a far cry from the Nevada desert, where Robbie has
been investigating UFO sightings and the possibility of
extra-terrestrial life.
Stateside paparazzi have recently been snapping a bearded Robbie who
seemed to be carrying a little extra weight.
But yesterday lunchtime, the life-long Vale fan looked trim and in
good spirits as he checked out his beloved Vale.
Sporting a beanie hat, casual jumper, jacket and jeans, he chatted to
the players and spoke to staff before touring the stadium.
After leaving Vale Park, he popped round the corner to one of his
favourite old haunts, the Vale Cafe.
Staff and customers were stunned as the international celebrity walked
through the door, bought a coffee and then helped it down with a
cigarette.
One worker, who asked not to be named, said: "When he came in, I just
said to him, 'I haven't seen you for 20 years'.
"He used to come in when he was a kid. It was good to see him again."
Back at Vale Park, Robbie's visit was shrouded in secrecy. Chairman
Bill Bratt said: "We have been asked not to make any comment, I'm
sorry."
But fans hope Robbie's visit will inspire Vale footballers still
licking their wounds after Tuesday night's defeat at Aldershot Town.
Vale fan Jean Jackson, of Oakhill, said: "I'm not surprised Robbie has
been down to the club because he is still interested in the team. I'm
delighted he has taken the time to come up here and show his support.
It will give a boost to the players and fans."
It is not known why Robbie was in Burslem yesterday, but he is
expected to attend the MTV Europe Music Awards at the Echo Arena,
Liverpool, on November 6.

ROBBIE NO.3 IN TOP TEN CELEBRITY FANTASIES

BRAD PITT AND GEORGE CLOONEY TOP POLL OF FEMALE FANTASIES
Two of the stars of Burn After Reading have been named the ultimate
celebrity fantasies for British women in a new poll.
Brad Pitt and George Clooney, who also worked together in the Ocean's
franchise, headed a list of most desirable celebrities compiled by
McCain to promote its new Simply Gorgeous chip product.
The poll of 3,000 women discovered that their favourite setting for a
fantasy encounter was under a Caribbean waterfall, closely followed by
a log cabin and posh penthouse suite.
Firemen were revealed as the professional group most women would most
like to be seduced by with musicians, pilots and doctors also popular.
And in terms of the celebrities who most commonly formed the object of
British women's affections, actors were the most desired, with Orlando
Bloom, Jude Law and Tom Cruise also named in the McCain top ten.
There was one surprise result, however, with X Factor judge Simon
Cowell placed above legendary lothario Russell Brand in the poll.
Christine Webber, a psychotherapist, agony aunt and broadcaster,
commented: "Fantasies are great ways to keep our love lives spicy and
varied. A woman's most erogenous zone is her mind, so that's the bit
of us that needs most exercise and attention! Fantasies are a great
way to escape from everyday life and to indulge ourselves.
"But lots of our fantasies would be quite damaging to turn into
reality – making love with our sexy boss for example might lose us our
job or even our own partner. For this reason, fantasies are mostly
best left in the mind."

ROBBIE MAKES IT IN TO THE TOP 100 IN AMERICAN BRASH MAGAZINE
The Brash
What's makes a man truly memorable? That's the principal question we
pondered as we compiled the 100 men who—through their actions and
choices—embodied what all men aspire to be: unforgettable. Similarly,
these 100 guys couldn't have made our list without first paying homage
to the 50 trailblazers who came before them. With the BRASH 100 and

a man. What makes him someone to follow, someone who matters. The
choices may surprise you, but their impact on our world is undeniable.
Come take a look for yourself.

is in the Guinness Book of World records when in one day he sold more

In one day. After leaving the huge British boy band Take That—which
sold 25 million records—Williams launched his solo career and, to date
has sold more than 55 million records worldwide. Though not a big name
in America, not unlike David Beckham in soccer, Williams hopes to
leave his mark on our shores as well.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS PLANS 2009 ALBUM
Frances Cronin
Newsbeat Entertainment Reporter
BBC Newsbeat
Robbie Williams' last album, Rudebox, was released in 2006
Robbie Williams' 'album strike' is over, according to his manager.
In January, Tim Clark said the singer wouldn't deliver a new record to
EMI because he wasn't happy with the company's new owners.
But he's now told Newsbeat that Robbie is hard at work on a new album
and is hopeful it could be released in 2009.
He said: "I would certainly hope that a new album will be coming next
year. There are never any guarantees but that's what we would hope."
Earlier this year, Tim Clarke was quoted as saying "we have no idea
how EMI will market and promote the album".
Many people took that to mean that Robbie Williams was on strike. But
Tim Clark says the singer hasn't stepped back from music and is
gearing up for a new album.
He said: "He's been writing and we heard some wonderful stuff. "I was
with Robbie last week. He was at home and he was writing songs and he
played some of them to us."
Tim says Robbie is on good form. "He's in very fine spirits, in very
fine form and I think what he's doing sounds really wonderful," he
said.
As for the subject of the album, there have been claims Robbie
Williams was working on an alien-themed record due to an interest in
UFOs. But Tim Clark says that's rubbish.
He said: "It's been pretty much exaggerated in the press, as if that
is anything new."

ROB DOING IT FOR THE KIDS WITH AWARDS
The Sentinel
A PRESENTATION evening at Robbie Williams's former school was extra
special for five pupils who received personal greetings and awards
from the superstar.
More than 100 students of St Margaret Ward Catholic School and Arts
College in Tunstall, were honoured at the event in the Victoria
Theatre last night. And a small group of teens were the first to
collect accolades sent from the Los Angeles home of the Potteries'
most famous son.
Robbie has created his own personal award to inspire teenagers to
overcome problems and chase their dreams.
His mum Jan was at the presentation evening to award the inaugural
certificates with his handwritten messages to the five nominees.
She said: "Robbie had a lot of happy memories from his time at school.
He was very sociable and the school nurtured his talent.
"He used to do a lot of amateur operatic performances and rehearsals
outside of school and although he wasn't very academic, the head at
the time realised he had a real talent and did all he could to help
him.
"I'm very proud to be handing out the awards to the pupils this
evening and I hope it will inspire them.
"They are troopers and it is easy to be good at things when everything
in life is going well, but when you have a fight on your hands that's
when it is more difficult."
Robbie's new award is for youngsters who face tough personal
challenges during their academic lives.
Their battles could range from crises at home to coping with health problems.
The five nominees who managed to succeed against the odds, were
Kathryn Pender-Cadman, Naomi Churchill, Laura Nuttall, Danielle
Escritt and Charlotte Bakewell.
The overall winner was Laura Nuttall who showed great character to
succeed in her GCSEs despite being in and out of hospital. She is now
at college and is also studying for a history A-level.
She said: "I'm very proud and happy about the award and it's so
special to have a it personally signed by Robbie Williams. He is a
hero of mine."
Since his time at St Margaret Ward in the 1980s, Robbie has supported
the development of both the school and its pupils.
He has helped fund specialist facilities for dance, drama and music
and has supported a performing arts group for adults, which meets
there.
A variety of other awards for outstanding academic and creative skills
were given out on the night and the audience of staff, parents and
friends were entertained with dance, drama and musical performances by
the pupils.
The Editor-in-Chief of The Sentinel Mike Sassi, was guest speaker. He
helped hand out the awards to the youngsters.
Mr Sassi praised the pupils' achievements and encouraged them to take
a lead in building a brighter future for Stoke-on-Trent. He told the
youngsters: "You are the future of this city and I am reliably
informed our future is safe in your hands."
The Principal of St Margaret Ward Chris Smith, left, said: "It is not
always possible to measure the spiritual, cultural and emotional
development of the pupils – but what we can be sure of, is we are very
proud of all our pupils.
"Who knows what the year ahead holds for us? However we have here a
community which is committed to the values of The Gospel."
CHASE YOUR DREAMS, ROBBIE TELLS PUPILS
The Sentinel
POP superstar Robbie Williams has created a brand new award at his old
school to inspire teenagers to chase their dreams.
Five students from St Margaret Ward Catholic School and Arts College,
in Tunstall, will find out next week that they have been put forward
for the honour.
Each of them will receive a certificate signed by Robbie himself, who
has also penned handwritten messages of congratulations from his Los
Angeles home.
The overall winner will be presented with the inaugural Robbie
Williams Award by the singer's mum, Jan.
The idea has grown out of Robbie's ongoing links with St Margaret
Ward, which he attended as a pupil back in the 1980s. Over the years,
he has stumped up tens of thousands of pounds to go towards the
school's specialist facilities for dance, drama and music.
His Give It Sum charity has also supported a performing arts group for
adults, which meets at the school. But Robbie's family say the latest
development is his way of spurring on youngsters who face exceptional
challenges in life. Their battles could range from personal crises at
home to coping with disabilities. The award will go to someone who has
managed to succeed against the odds. It will be handed out at the
school's prizegiving evening on Thursday, which is being held at the
Victoria Hall in Hanley.
Jan Williams, who used to be a governor at St Margaret Ward, said:
"Robert has retained a genuine interest in the life of his old school,
where there are dedicated dance and drama studios already carrying his
name.
"This unique award has been designed personally by Robert in
collaboration with the school, and he strongly believes it's important
to encourage young people to have confidence and self-belief to ensure
they can overcome some of the unexpected challenges which come their
way.
"By continuing to make this award available, we hope to see pupils
aspiring to be nominated year by year."
St Margaret Ward will also be presenting a variety of other awards on
the night, recognising everything from young people's contributions to
the environment through to their enterprising work and artistic or
musical talents.
Jo Blagg, St Margaret Ward's arts college manager, said pupils from
any year group would be eligible for the Robbie Williams Award. Two of
the five nominees this year have just completed their GCSEs. She said:
"The impact the award will have on the individuals will be profound.
"We sent the certificates to Los Angeles to get Robbie to sign them –
they have all come back and he's put little comments on them as well
as signing them."

CELEBS JOIN CHARITY FOOTBALL MATCH
Press Association
Football legends and celebrities teamed up in a seven-goal match at
Wembley Stadium to raise money for United Nations children's charity
Unicef.
Watched by an estimated crowd of 45,000 cheering fans, 34 celebrities
braved a chilly London evening to play in Socceraid's charity football
match.
Two teams - England and Rest Of The World - made up of a mix of
non-sporting celebrities and professional or ex-professional
footballers, battled it out for 90 minutes on the famed football
pitch.
England eventually got the better of Rest Of The World, pulling one
goal ahead to clinch victory at 4-3.
The brainchild of singer Robbie Williams, the match hopes to raise
over £1m to go towards health, education and medicine in 190 countries
worldwide, Unicef said.
The event was hosted by Ant and Dec and Louise Redknapp also provided
pitch-side commentary with England manager Harry Redknapp.
The referee was Pierluigi Collina, who also refereed at Socceraid in 2006.
In a game filled with some moments of brilliance and some slightly
lacklustre play, some performances stood out above the rest, including
a hat trick by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer. Craig David was named
Man of the Match for an energetic performance.
Speaking after the game Shearer said: "I thought it was a great game.
It was done in the right way. People expect to be entertained and I
think that's what they got."

WILLIAMS OFFERED $3M FOR NORWAY GIG
Ireland online
British pop star Robbie Williams has reportedly been offered $3m
(€1.9m) to perform a comeback gig in Norway.
The 'Angels' singer has become reclusive in recent years, holing
himself up at his Los Angeles home in a bid to escape the glare of the
world's media.
Despite being one of the UK's most popular performers, the former Take
That star isn't too keen to revive his career.
Now the star has been offered the multi-million dollar deal for a
one-off performance at a music festival in Sandness, Norway, later
this year.
The money may not be enough to tempt the singer back to the stage.
A source tells British newspaper the Daily Mirror: "It would probably
be the easiest money he'll make in his life, but it's touch and go
whether he'll say yes. We'll have to wait and see."
